Have you always wanted to plant your own garden but aren’t sure how to start it? How many times have you brought home flowers from a florist or store and thought "I wish I could grow my own flowers"? Have you ever purchased fruit or vegetables and thought "I should grow my own; it would be so much cheaper and probably taste better"? Have you ever thought about starting an herb garden to save money? Have you ever looked at your house or apartment and thought "but where the heck would I put this garden?" Here is news that should make you happy: you can grow your own garden just about anywhere you want, even in your living room! Here are some tips and tricks to help you begin your garden.

Improve the quality of your dirt or soil before you begin planting. No two patches of soil are the same. The fact is that the dirt you already have in your yard is probably not very good for growing plants–which could have contributed to your lack of a garden in the past. Soil and nutrient needs are unique to each type of plant.

Before you plant prepare your garden. The simplest way to prepare your garden for planting is to spread organic refuse across the soil. A few months before you start planting spread compost (the best organic material for preparing soil), mulch or grass clippings (also good) over your potential garden. As the organics decompose they leave behind their nutrients and vitamins which helps your garden thrive. When in the sun, you’ll want to cover your eyes with some reading sunglasses. Most of gardening involves following a routine. Over time you will figure out a schedule and eventually you will just know what needs to be done without having to think about it. You will know how to check for signs of drying out, how often to add nutrients or compost to your garden and how often to weed. Let yourself figure out your own gardening schedule and then just stick to it. Lots of beginning gardeners have gardens that die because they don’t realize how much work is actually involved in keeping a garden alive and thriving (or they simply stop caring).

Don’t rush. You might be dreaming of having your entire yard filled with blooming and blossoming plants. If have not ever started a garden of your very own before, it is a good idea to start small. This way you won’t have to worry about putting in a whole bunch of effort into something that might turn out to not interest you very much. You need time, commitment and patience if you want to be a gardener. Doesn’t marriage require a courtship period? Why dedicate your whole yard to a vegetable garden if you haven’t ever even sprouted a lima bean before? There are a growing number of people who wear reading glasses to help while working in the garden.

Starting a garden is a lot of work but it is also a lot of fun. Your garden will be bountiful if you first take some time to learn about gardening. Have fun with your garden! It’s a good reason to play and spend time outside!
